Helmut Lang Showcases FW20 Collection on the Streets of NYC

Last week Monday, modern minimalist brand Helmut Lang showcased their Fall/Winter Collection in a different way than usual using the talents of fashion photographer Suhil Gupta.

Instead of having a runway show, Creative Director Thomas Cawson employed the talents of photographer Suhil Gupta to capture Helmut Lang’s Fall/Winter 2020 collection. The collection name Christopher Street is inspired by 1970s fashion, this collection is part of Cawson’s 1976 series.

Gupta’s history in shooting this area in the Greenwich village runs deep. Gupta photographed the same neighborhood during the Stonewall Riots, which helped the gay rights movement forward during the late 1970s. He presents a view throughout the lookbook capturing the portrayal of people “who have been denied a space to be themselves.” The photographer strives to tell a story of those who were repressed during this time in history and remake this era into a positive and progressive showcase through the Helmut Lang’s garments and motives of the same movement.

The collection includes both woman and menswear with hits of androgynous and unisex flares that Helmut Lang is known for. The womenswear line features high slit skirts, high-waisted flared denim, work shirt, work blazers, a-line cut dresses, sheer turtlenecks, fur jackets, and structured tops. The menswear line includes rugged leather sherpas, work shirts, suede coats, dusters, and long lean blazers. The collection uses their regular neutral color palette but adds in hints of neon orange and neon green. In multiple Helmut Lang lookbooks, the stylists utilize each garment regardless of gender and is a progressive brand that breaks and bends the barrier of gender norms in the fashion industry.

Cawson is notorious for having an extreme love and admiration for denim which he did not stray away from in this season’s collection. He includes everything denim all within this homage to the 70s. The denim showcased in this collection includes high-waisted bell bottoms, sleek tailored black plants, dark wash denim with matching jackets and dip dyed denim button ups.

Instead of having a fashion show to showcase the newest release for the Fall/Winter 2020 collection, Helmut Lang held a gallery with Gupta’s photography installations accompanied by the piece itself hung in a glass showcase. The gallery just ended on February 14th but you can still shop the full collection at the Helmut Lang flagship store in New York and online on Helmut Lang’s official website.
